Jawai is unlike any other wildlife destination in Rajasthan, and arguably in India. It is not a conventional national park with fixed safari routes, entry gates and ticketed zones — it is an open wilderness shaped by massive granite hills, seasonal water bodies and rural settlements, where humans and leopards have coexisted for generations. The Jawai leopards are a special population living across the Jawai-Bera, Sena and Varawal region of Pali district, particularly notable for their ability to adapt to this challenging terrain — often living within metres of Rabari shepherd villages without conflict.
The destination centres on Jawai Bandh, a historic dam built by Maharaja Umaid Singh of Jodhpur, whose reservoir now draws a remarkable diversity of birdlife, from flamingos to eagles, alongside marsh crocodiles and other wildlife drawn to the water. Located between Udaipur and Jodhpur, approximately 130 kilometres from each, Jawai sits at the foot of the Aravalli Hills — geologically and atmospherically distinct from both the desert camps of Jaisalmer and the tiger forests of Ranthambore.
What makes a Jawai safari fundamentally different from Ranthambore or most other wildlife reserves is its openness. There are no park gates, no fixed safari zones and no permit system. Instead, experienced local trackers guide visitors across a shared landscape where remarkable leopard sightings are possible because the granite hills offer clear natural vantage points rather than dense forest.
Levistay’s Jawai collection remains intentionally small. We selected four properties across three collections—one operating among the world’s finest safari lodges, two boutique retreats offering intimate luxury in the leopard hills, and one exceptional Escape that captures the spirit of Jawai without unnecessary excess. Dozens of other camps were considered, but comfortable was never enough. Every property had to contribute something genuinely distinctive before earning its place.

Ranthambore operates as a formally bounded tiger reserve — fixed entry gates, ticketed zones, permits booked weeks in advance, and safari routes that restrict where a vehicle can actually go. Jawai has none of this structure, and that absence is the entire point. There is no boundary fence, no permit system and no zoning — leopards move freely across open granite hills that also happen to be home to working Rabari shepherd villages. The experience feels less like visiting a managed wildlife park and more like witnessing an ecosystem that has simply continued operating as it always has, with guests permitted to observe it closely.
No. Unlike Ranthambore or any formally gazetted national park, Jawai operates without a permit system, since the landscape is not a single fenced reserve but an open, community-shared territory. This makes planning considerably simpler — there is no race to book a limited number of zone permits months in advance, and safari timings can be arranged with far more flexibility around your own schedule.
Sightings occur in roughly 80 to 90 percent of safaris, which is a genuinely remarkable figure for a naturally elusive big cat. This is possible precisely because the terrain is so open — granite outcrops with little dense cover mean an experienced tracker can spot a resting leopard from a considerable distance, something far harder to achieve in the thick forest cover of a conventional tiger reserve.
October to March offers the most comfortable daytime temperatures for safari drives, and is when most guests choose to visit. That said, leopard sightings remain strong throughout the year given how open the terrain is — unlike forested reserves where sightings genuinely drop in certain seasons, Jawai’s visibility holds up reasonably well even outside the peak window.
Two nights is the practical minimum to get a genuine sense of the landscape and a fair chance at strong sightings across morning and evening drives. Three nights allows time to add a village excursion or a half-day trip to Kumbhalgarh without feeling rushed on the wildlife side of the stay.
