Kumbhalgarh Fort was built in 1458 by Rana Kumbha, one of Mewar’s most prolific builder-kings, credited with constructing 32 of the 84 fortresses that once defended the kingdom against successive waves of invasion. Its defining feature is scale rather than ornamentation — a wall stretching 36 kilometres along the ridgeline of the Aravalli hills, frequently cited as the second-longest continuous fortification on earth after the Great Wall of China, wide enough in places for eight horses to ride abreast. Within its walls, over 360 temples once stood alongside palaces and granaries — this was not simply a military position but a self-sufficient town built to withstand a siege of years, not weeks.
What makes Kumbhalgarh genuinely different from Jaisalmer, Udaipur or Jodhpur in our collection is honesty about timing rather than history. This is not a city with four centuries of palace hotels to choose from — it is a rural region of village manors, hunting lodges and family estates only now being rediscovered by travellers looking for something quieter than Rajasthan’s major circuit. Several of the properties we have researched here carry genuine centuries-old lineage of their own, connected to noble families of the surrounding Pali and Rajsamand districts rather than the grand Mewar or Marwar royal houses themselves — smaller stories, told at a smaller scale, but no less real for it.
We do not believe every destination needs to arrive with four centuries of palace history to be worth including in our collection.
