Jaipur was founded in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, who relocated his capital from the hilltop fortress of Amber to a planned city on the plains below — one of the first cities in India laid out on a grid, its streets and quarters designed according to principles of Vastu Shastra rather than growing organically over centuries. The signature rose-pink wash covering the old city’s facades came later still, ordered in 1876 specifically to welcome the visiting Prince of Wales, and has been maintained ever since. The “Pink City” name, in other words, is younger than the city itself by nearly a century and a half.
What genuinely distinguishes Jaipur from Jaisalmer or Udaipur is the density of royal residences still standing — and, in several cases, still connected to the families who built them. Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II lived at what is now Rambagh Palace with his wife, Maharani Gayatri Devi, before converting it into India’s first palace hotel in 1957. The Raj Palace, built in 1727, remains home in spirit to the sixteenth-generation descendant of its original builder. This gives Jaipur an unusually high concentration of verifiable lineage among our collection — though, as with every destination we curate, not every property claiming heritage in this city has earned that claim equally, and we have researched each one individually rather than taking any single claim at face value.

Construction began in 1592 under Raja Man Singh I, completed under Mirza Raja Jai Singh — a hillside fortress in red sandstone and white marble overlooking Maota Lake, blending Rajput and Mughal architectural traditions.

A palace standing in the middle of Man Sagar Lake, its exact origins debated among historians but taking its current form under Sawai Jai Singh II’s 18th-century expansions — four further storeys lie submerged beneath the waterline, held by specially designed lime mortar for over two centuries.

A UNESCO World Heritage astronomical observatory built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II in the 1720s, its nineteen stone instruments still capable of measuring time and celestial positions with remarkable precision.
