Where golden dunes meet extraordinary hospitality — personally curated desert stays from intimate boutique camps to iconic private estates.

ABOUT THIS DESTINATION

The Thar Desert — Where India's Most Extraordinary Desert Stays Are Found

The Thar Desert is one of the world’s great natural theatres. Spanning 200,000 square kilometres of golden dunes, ancient caravanserai routes and star-filled skies undimmed by light pollution — it is a destination that demands to be experienced rather than merely seen.

The Sam Sand Dunes, 42 kilometres west of Jaisalmer city, mark the heart of the desert experience. Here, the dunes reach their most dramatic proportions — sweeping crescents of sand that shift colour from pale gold at midday to deep amber at sunset and near-silver under a full moon. This is where Levistay’s finest desert camps are positioned — far enough from the road to feel genuinely remote, close enough to Jaisalmer city to remain convenient.

What separates a great desert stay from a mediocre one is almost entirely about space and silence. The finest camps — Sujan The Serai foremost among them — are built on private land measured in hundreds of acres. The difference between sleeping in a tent surrounded by other tents and sleeping in a tent where the nearest light is a kilometre away is not a difference of degree. It is a completely different experience.

Best time to visit: October to March. The desert is hospitable, nights are cool and the light is extraordinary. Avoid April to June — temperatures exceed 45°C.

THAR DESERT QUESTIONS

Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

The most common questions about staying in the Thar Desert — answered honestly from direct personal knowledge of the region.

The finest Thar Desert camps are positioned near Sam Sand Dunes — approximately 42 kilometres west of Jaisalmer city. Sam is where the dunes reach their most dramatic scale. The drive from Jaisalmer takes roughly 45 minutes to one hour along a well-maintained road. Bhavya Resort sits at the prime heart of Sam, directly at the dunes. Sujan The Serai, before the desert for maximum privacy and silence.

October to March is the ideal window. Temperatures are comfortable, the light is extraordinary and the nights are cool enough to sit outside under the stars. November and December offer the clearest skies for stargazing. February and March bring milder days that are excellent for camel safaris and dune walks. Avoid April through June — temperatures regularly exceed 45°C and most premium camps close for the summer season.

A minimum of two nights is strongly recommended. One night in the desert is barely enough to settle in and feel the pace of the place. Two nights allows a full sunrise and sunset experience, time for a camel safari, a cultural evening and the extraordinary experience of waking in the desert silence before the day begins. Three nights is ideal for guests who want to fully unwind.

Each property in our Thar Desert collection occupies a distinct position. Sujan The Serai is a Relais & Châteaux estate spanning 100 private acres — the most spacious and iconic desert experience in Jaisalmer. Bhavya Resort offers unique accommodation types found nowhere else at Sam — mud houses, African-style tents and golden stone duplex villas, positioned right at the heart of the dunes. Kanak Jaisalmer offers ten generously spaced tents with exceptional privacy and deeply curated cultural programming. Karwaan is distinguished by the only rooftop infinity pool in the Sand Dunes area.

The Thar Desert around Jaisalmer is a well-established tourism destination with excellent infrastructure. All the camps we list have experienced staff, reliable transport links to Jaisalmer city and round-the-clock support. The desert roads are well maintained and the area has a long history of welcoming international visitors safely.

The most memorable experiences include camel safaris at golden hour, dune sunset viewing, private dining in the middle of the desert under the stars, traditional Rajasthani folk music and dance performances, jeep safaris into the deeper desert, and stargazing — the Thar has some of the darkest skies in Rajasthan, making it exceptional for astronomy. Cultural interactions with local communities and artisans are also available through specific properties.

Light, breathable clothing in neutral colours for daytime. A warm layer or jacket for evenings — desert nights can drop significantly in temperature between November and February. Comfortable closed shoes for dune walks. Sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses are essential during the day. A good camera for the light, which is spectacular at sunrise and sunset. Most camps provide basic toiletries but bringing your own preferred products is advisable.

Yes — we can coordinate transfers between Jaisalmer city or the railway station and your chosen desert camp as part of your booking arrangements. Simply mention this when you contact us and we will include it in your overall stay coordination.

Yes — the desert is an extraordinary experience for children. The dune activities, camel rides, cultural performances and open space all create memories that children remember for years. Most camps can accommodate families and some have specific family tent configurations. Mention your children’s ages when you contact us and we will recommend the most suitable property for a family stay.

The best desert properties operate with genuine sensitivity to the fragile desert ecosystem. Sujan The Serai, through the SUJÁN Conservation Foundation, actively supports local communities and wildlife conservation in the Thar region. When you choose a Levistay-curated property you are choosing a stay that is aware of its environmental responsibility — not just a camp that looks beautiful in photographs.

WHILE YOU ARE HERE

Jaisalmer Fort

45 MINUTES FROM SAND DUNES

One of the world’s largest living forts — Jaisalmer’s golden sandstone citadel has been continuously inhabited for nine centuries. UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fort’s bastions, temples and havelis reveal medieval Rajput architecture at its most intact. Visit early morning before the crowds arrive.

Sam Sand Dunes Jaisalmer

Sam Sand Dunes

AT YOUR DOORSTEP

The most dramatic dune landscape in Rajasthan — crescent-shaped formations that shift colour from pale gold at midday to deep amber at sunset. The light here between 5pm and 7pm is one of the most photographed phenomena in India. Your camp is positioned within or beside these dunes.

Patwon Ki Haveli Jaisalmer

Patwon Ki Haveli

45 MINUTES FROM SAND DUNES

A cluster of five interconnected havelis built by a wealthy merchant family in the nineteenth century. The sandstone carvings on the facade are considered among the most intricate in Rajasthan. Each haveli has its own distinct character and the complex is accessible to visitors throughout the day.

Gadisar Lake

45 MINUTES FROM SAND DUNES

An ancient reservoir built in the fourteenth century as Jaisalmer’s primary water source. Today it is a tranquil spot at the edge of the city — particularly beautiful at dawn when the ghats and chattris reflect in the still water and migratory birds gather along the shore.

Kuldhara at Jaisalmer

Kuldhara

30 MINUTES FROM SAND DUNES

An entire village abandoned overnight in 1825 — the full story of its desertion remains part legend, part history. The preserved stone houses and temples of Kuldhara create an atmospheric and genuinely unique destination. Best visited in the late afternoon when the low light transforms the sandstone ruins.
