The name Kanak, meaning gold in Sanskrit, reflects both the colour of the Thar Desert and the warmth of Rajasthan’s hospitality. Set away from the crowds, the property offers a quieter interpretation of desert camping—where architecture, local traditions, regional cuisine and thoughtfully curated experiences come together in a setting that feels both authentic and contemporary. Rather than treating culture as entertainment, Kanak weaves it naturally into every part of the stay.
One of the property’s defining strengths is its celebration of Rajasthan’s culinary heritage. Guests can explore eight distinct dining experiences, from traditional thalis and open-air dune dinners to Khad Cooking—an ancient desert technique in which food is slow-cooked beneath hot sand and embers. Alongside these are professional stargazing sessions, guided desert trails and opportunities to engage with local artisans, creating a stay that encourages guests to experience the Thar beyond its landscape alone.

Khad Cooking is one of Rajasthan’s oldest desert cooking traditions. Ingredients are marinated, carefully wrapped and slow-cooked beneath hot sand and glowing embers using the natural heat of the desert. During Kanak’s Swaad Session, guests can observe the preparation, learn about the history of the technique and enjoy the finished meal. It is one of the property’s signature cultural experiences and offers a fascinating insight into traditional Thar cuisine.
For couples seeking the most complete and private experience — the Jaipur Suite is the clear recommendation. At 53 square metres with a private plunge pool, a separate study room and an exclusive front porch, it is the most luxurious desert tent accommodation at Kanak and represents exceptional value at the Escapes price point. For guests focused on the cultural and culinary programme rather than private pool facilities — the Jodhpur Tents at 41 square metres offer well-appointed comfort with sweeping desert views. Kanak is located on Salkha — approximately 39 kilometres from Jaisalmer Fort and city centre, and 46 kilometres from Jaisalmer Railway Station. The drive takes around 45 minutes to one hour. Airport transfers are available directly through the property. Levistay can coordinate transfer arrangements when booking your stay.
Complimentary breakfast is included for all guests. Some of the specialised dining experiences — including the Dhora Dining outdoor desert dinner and the Swaad Sessions — and the guided trails may be charged additionally. We recommend confirming which experiences are included and which are chargeable at the time of booking. Levistay will clarify this when arranging your stay so there are no surprises on arrival.
The Stars and Thar experience is best enjoyed on clear evenings, particularly between October and March, when the desert skies are at their clearest. Visibility depends on weather and moonlight conditions, and sessions are conducted subject to suitable viewing conditions to ensure the best possible experience.
