Ranthambore National Park takes its name from a 10th-century hill fort still standing at the reserve’s centre — Ranthambore Fort, once a stronghold contested by the Chauhan Rajputs, the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughal Empire in turn, now sitting quietly within the same forest its tigers move through daily. This is what genuinely separates Ranthambore from every other tiger reserve in India: nowhere else can a single safari drive pass a resting tiger, a 10th-century temple and the crumbling walls of a medieval fort within the space of an hour.
The land’s history as a hunting ground predates its life as a national park by centuries. What is now protected tiger habitat was once the private hunting grounds of the Maharajas of Jaipur, who built lodges and pavilions across the forest specifically for royal shikar — several of which, including the building that eventually became Taj Sawai Madhopur Lodge, still stand today, repurposed from hunting lodge to hotel rather than built new to resemble one.
Ranthambore was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1955 and became one of the founding reserves of Project Tiger in 1973, India’s flagship tiger conservation programme. A 14th-century hill fort standing majestically inside the national park boundaries. Its ancient ramparts enclose the famous Trinetra Ganesh Temple, offering one of the few spiritual sites in the world where pilgrims and wild tigers share the exact same geographical footprint.
LAKESIDE VIEW
The largest of the reserve’s three main lakes, its still waters perfectly mirror the fort walls towering above. It is the most iconic backdrop in the park and serves as a vital watering hole for prime tiger and marsh crocodile sightings.

A striking red-walled royal hunting lodge resting directly on the banks of Padam Talao. Long predating the park’s sanctuary status, it features one of India’s largest ancient banyan trees growing right beside its entry steps.
