Jaisalmer Fort is not a monument that empties at closing time and waits for tomorrow’s visitors. Roughly four thousand people live within its walls today — families who have occupied the same narrow lanes for generations, running shops, temples and homes inside fortifications first raised in 1156. This is what genuinely separates Jaisalmer from almost every other fort city in Rajasthan, including Jodhpur and Chittorgarh: the fort here is not a museum. It is a neighbourhood that happens to be eight hundred years old.
The city beyond the fort’s walls carries the same golden sandstone DNA throughout. Wealthy merchant families of the 19th century — grown rich on trade routes that once connected this desert outpost to Central Asia and beyond — competed with each other to build havelis whose carved facades took master craftsmen years to complete. Patwon ki Haveli alone consists of five separate mansions joined into a single ornamented row. This is a city built almost entirely from one material, by craftsmen working within one tradition, over several centuries — which is precisely why it glows the particular shade of gold it is named for, and why no other Rajasthan city looks quite like it.
This history shapes where—and how—you stay. Unlike Jodhpur or Udaipur, Jaisalmer isn’t defined by a collection of converted royal palaces. Instead, it offers something rarer: the opportunity to stay within a living fort, sleep in the former residence of the family that once ruled this desert kingdom, or experience a contemporary palace that feels as though it has always belonged to this landscape.

Suryagarh is not a converted heritage building — it is a contemporary palace built from nothing in the architectural language of a Jaisalmer fort, rising from the desert on the city's outskirts as though it has always stood there. Golden sandstone ramparts, courtyards within courtyards, and a desert dining experience served entirely by candlelight beyond the walls create an experience that could not exist as a smaller version of itself.

Suryagarh is not a converted historic building. It was constructed new, in the architectural language of a Jaisalmer fort, achieving a scale and drama that no genuine heritage conversion in the city can match. If you want authenticity through age, our Escapes properties — particularly Mandir Palace — offer that instead.

We recommend a minimum of two nights to properly explore the fort, the havelis and Gadisar Lake without rushing, before continuing to a Thar Desert camp for one to two further nights.
Most heritage properties within or close to the old city are within easy reach of the main attractions on foot. Properties located outside the city centre offer a quieter setting and are best reached by car, which we can help arrange as part of your journey.
Jaisalmer Fort is entirely unique because it is India’s only “living fort.” Unlike other monumental fortresses that serve strictly as museums, nearly a quarter of the city’s old population still resides inside the citadel walls. Waking up inside or beside it means being part of a continuous, 900-year-old living neighborhood filled with homes, active temples, and vibrant markets.
The ideal window is between September and March. During these months, the daytime weather is beautifully pleasant for walking tours, and the evenings are crisp and cool. The light during winter is also the most spectacular for photography. We highly advise avoiding the summer months of April through September, when desert temperatures frequently exceed 45°C.
Staying inside the fort puts you in the middle of history, but it comes with spatial limitations — rooms are generally smaller, and vehicle access is restricted. Heritage properties located just outside the fort walls, in the old city, offer significantly more spacious luxury layouts, private courtyards, modern amenities, and breathtaking, unobstructed views of the entire illuminated citadel structure at night.
Jaisalmer is accessible by both air and rail. Seasonal direct flights operate during the main travel season, while Jaisalmer Junction is connected to major cities including Delhi, Jaipur and Jodhpur by regular train services. UNESCO HERITAGE
One of the world’s largest living forts — Jaisalmer’s golden sandstone citadel has been continuously inhabited for nine centuries. UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fort’s bastions, temples and havelis reveal medieval Rajput architecture at its most intact. Visit early morning before the crowds arrive.
ARCHITECTURE
A striking nineteenth-century mansion famous for its unique silhouette, which narrows at the base and expands into a peacock-shaped roof supported by 38 intricately carved balconies. Built by a powerful and ruthless prime minister, its distinctive architecture stands as a bold testament to Jaisalmer’s historic wealth and political power.
ARCHITECTURE
A cluster of five interconnected havelis built by a wealthy merchant family in the nineteenth century. The sandstone carvings on the facade are considered among the most intricate in Rajasthan. Each haveli has its own distinct character and the complex is accessible to visitors throughout the day.
LAKESIDE
An ancient reservoir built in the fourteenth century as Jaisalmer’s primary water source. Today it is a tranquil spot at the edge of the city — particularly beautiful at dawn when the ghats and chattris reflect in the still water and migratory birds gather along the shore.
ROYAL HERITAGE
A peaceful complex of royal cenotaphs built by the rulers of Jaisalmer over several centuries. Rising above a desert garden overlooking an ancient reservoir, Bada Bagh is especially beautiful at sunrise and sunset, when the golden sandstone glows against the surrounding landscape.
HISTORIC VILLAGE
An entire village abandoned overnight in 1825 — the full story of its desertion remains part legend, part history. The preserved stone houses and temples of Kuldhara create an atmospheric and genuinely unique destination. Best visited in the late afternoon when the low light transforms the sandstone ruins.
DESERT EXPERIENCE
The most dramatic dune landscape in Rajasthan — crescent-shaped formations that shift colour from pale gold at midday to deep amber at sunset. The light here between 5pm and 7pm is one of the most photographed phenomena in India. Your camp is positioned within or beside these dunes.
WILDLIFE
One of the largest national parks in India — covering over 3,000 square kilometres of desert ecosystem. Home to the Great Indian Bustard, the blackbuck, desert foxes and numerous migratory bird species. Jeep safaris into the park can be arranged through most desert camps.
CULTURE
A thoughtfully curated museum preserving the traditions of the Thar Desert through textiles, coins, weaponry, musical instruments and folk culture. The traditional puppet performances provide an engaging introduction to the region’s heritage.
