Mohangarh Fort was completed in 1944 by His Highness Maharawal Jawahir Singh ji of Jaisalmer, built for his younger son and heir to the Mohangarh estate, Maharaj Hukam Singh ji. It carries a distinction no other property in our collection can claim: it is, quite literally, the last fort ever built in India, raised in the final years before the princely states dissolved into independent India. The royal family originally used it to monitor administration, revenue and security across the erstwhile Jaisalmer State, as well as a quiet retreat away from the city — a working royal outpost first, and only a guest’s destination many decades later.

Built of yellow sandstone and decorated with delicately carved screens, balconies and white marble elephant statues throughout the grounds, the fort is something of an architectural curiosity — new enough, by Rajasthan’s standards, to have been deliberately designed in a single vision rather than organically expanded across centuries by successive rulers, yet built entirely within the old language of Rajasthani fort construction. The result feels simultaneously ancient and oddly precise. The Zenana Mahal, the former ladies’ section, and the Mardana Mahal, the former men’s section, both carry Italian marble flooring and walls decorated with colourful hand-made motif tiles — a level of finishing usually reserved for the grandest royal residences, applied here to a fort barely eighty years old.

Raj Kumar Dr. Jitendra Singh Ji, the grandson of the fort’s original builder, personally opened its doors to guests — meaning the welcome you receive here comes from someone with a direct, unbroken, blood connection to the building, not a hired management company operating a heritage brand on someone else’s behalf. The fort has also become a recognisable Bollywood filming location, having appeared in productions including Sarfarosh and Tashan, and the Tollywood film Mersel — a small but genuine mark of how visually distinctive this building has proven to be, well beyond the hospitality world.

What sets a stay here apart, beyond the rooms themselves, is what the fort holds around them. A Vintage Armoury Room houses cannons, guns, hilts and assorted artefacts dating from 1690 to 1850 — a genuine, walkable museum within the property, not a curated display case borrowed from elsewhere. A short drive away lies a volcanic eruption site, where hills have stood black for thousands of years from ancient molten lava and the minerals it carried, and nearby lakes and oases shelter the critically endangered Great Indian Bustard alongside Sand Grouse — a desert landscape with genuine geological and ecological depth, not simply sand to the horizon.
