LEVISTAY PRIVÉ • SATPURA NATIONAL PARK

Forsyth Lodge

A benchmark 16-acre re-wilded eco-lodge set on the boundary of Satpura—where guided walking safaris, Denwa River canoeing, mud-and-brick architecture, and deep conservation define wilderness living.

THE STORY OF THE LODGE

A Re-Wilded Sanctuary for Walking Safaris in Satpura

Situated on the edge of Satpura Tiger Reserve near Madhai in Madhya Pradesh, Forsyth Lodge takes its name from Captain James Forsyth, the 19th-century British explorer who first documented the rugged highlands of the Satpura range. Set within 16 acres of meticulously re-wilded forest, the lodge stands as a pioneer of conservation-led, experiential safari hospitality in Central India.

The architecture is an ode to local vernacular techniques and sustainable earth building. Utilizing rammed earth, sun-dried mud bricks, clay tiles, and reclaimed timber, the 12 cottages merge seamlessly into the regenerated canopy. Designed to maximize airflow and minimize environmental impact, the structures keep interiors naturally cool during hot Central Indian afternoons while eliminating heavy concrete footprints.

Accommodations comprise 12 independently situated cottages, split between standalone Earth Cottages and Machan Suites. Each cottage features rustic-chic interiors, handcrafted wooden furniture, wide picture windows, open-air garden showers, and private rooftop machans or verandas designed for stargazing and listening to the night sounds of the jungle.

Gastronomy at Forsyth Lodge is a farm-to-table culinary journey spotlighting regional flavors and organic local produce. Meals are served in the open-air central lodge, under the shade of native trees, or as lantern-lit bush dinners in private forest clearings. The kitchen excels at traditional Central Indian thalis, baked artisan treats, and wholesome health-conscious dishes.

What truly sets Forsyth Lodge apart is its commitment to diverse, non-motorized wilderness exploration. Satpura is India’s only major tiger reserve where guests can explore on foot with expert naturalists. Days are filled with guided walking safaris through tiger territory, canoeing down the pristine Denwa River to observe marsh crocodiles and waterbirds, night drives in the buffer zone, and traditional jeep safaris into the core park.
