Jodhpur was founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha, a chief of the Rathore clan, who built Mehrangarh Fort atop a 400-foot rocky outcrop overlooking the plains as the new capital of the Marwar kingdom — a defensive position so formidable that the fort has never fallen to a direct assault in nearly six centuries. The old city grew up beneath its walls, its houses gradually washed in the distinctive indigo blue that gives Jodhpur its nickname today — a colour originally associated with the city’s Brahmin community, later adopted more broadly, and now maintained as much for its heat-reflecting properties in the desert climate as for tradition.
What genuinely distinguishes Jodhpur within our Rajasthan collection is the sheer scale of its royal architecture. Umaid Bhawan Palace, completed in 1943 after fifteen years of construction, remains one of the largest private residences in the world — 347 rooms built not from ambition alone but as a deliberate employment programme during a three-year famine, when Maharaja Umaid Singh commissioned the palace specifically to give work to thousands of drought-stricken farmers. It stands today divided in three: a private residence still home to the current royal family, a museum open to visitors, and a hotel.
Beyond the city itself, the Marwar region surrounding Jodhpur holds a genuine density of family-run desert forts and havelis — several still owned and personally run by the same families who built them generations ago, rather than converted and sold on.
