The Elgin, Darjeeling

Built in 1887 as the summer residence of the Maharaja of Cooch Behar—where Victorian timber paneling, crackling open hearths, original lithographs, and high tea overlooking the Darjeeling valley evoke a bygone era of hill station royalty.

THE STORY OF THE HOTEL

A 125-Year-Old Royal Summer Palace in the Heart of Darjeeling

Built in 1887 at 6,000 feet above sea level, The Elgin was originally constructed as the royal summer residence of Maharaja Nripendra Narayan of Cooch Behar.Designed as a grand country manor to host royal celebrations during the sweltering Indian summer, the property was later leased to British families—including Madame Nancy Oakley in the 1950s—before being lovingly restored as Darjeeling’s premier heritage hotel by the Oberoi family.

The architecture is a quintessential celebration of Victorian colonial aesthetics. Constructed with sloping roofs, solid stone masonry, and extensive Burma teak and oak paneling, the manor radiates warmth amidst the cool mountain air.The interiors function as a private gallery of colonial art—adorned with original lithographs by Thomas and William Daniell, etchings by G. Douglas, antique chandeliers, and a grand piano in the central lounge.

Accommodations comprise 25 elegantly appointed rooms and suites, each steeped in vintage Raj-era charm.Rooms feature polished Burma teak wood floors, plush upholstered seating, period wooden armoires, marble-finished bathrooms, and crackling brick fireplaces lit on chilly mountain evenings—with select rooms framing sweeping vistas across the manicured gardens and Darjeeling valley.

Gastronomy at The Elgin is anchored by classic high-tea traditions and multi-course dining. The Orchid Dining Room serves set buffets and à la carte spreads featuring European, Asian, and regional Himalayan recipes under crystal chandeliers; The Tea Lounge & Timber Bar serves rare single-origin Darjeeling flushes alongside evening spirits; while The Gazebo in the garden offers light outdoor snacks amidst mountain breezes.

Life at The Elgin moves to an unhurried, nostalgic rhythm. Upon arrival, guests are welcomed with a traditional glass of cherry liquor and a silken Tibetan khada.Days are spent exploring the nearby Mall Road and UNESCO World Heritage Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, taking guided heritage walks through town, or simply relaxing by log fires with a book and a steaming pot of freshly brewed Darjeeling tea.
