Named after the sacred Madhuca Longifolia (Mahua) tree revered across Central India, Mahua Kothi was Taj Safaris’ pioneering wilderness lodge in Bandhavgarh National Park. Spread across 40 acres of private forest just twenty minutes from the park entrance, the estate centers around a beautifully restored 1890s colonial homestead (kothi), surrounded by dense teak woodland and ancient flowering mahua trees.
The architecture is a deeply authentic tribute to the indigenous Baiga forest tribes of Madhya Pradesh. Designed with low-impact vernacular principles, the accommodations mirror traditional village kuthiyas (homestead huts). Built with hand-troweled mud plaster in warm rust and terracotta tones, whitewashed accents, exposed timber roof beams, and handmade clay tiles, the cottages merge imperceptibly into the surrounding jungle.
Accommodations comprise just 12 private Kuthiya suites, offering complete seclusion amidst the trees. Interiors feature cool stone floors, hand-loomed forest-green textiles, traditional brass lanterns, wooden window shutters, and open courtyard sit-outs.
