Bordering the pristine grasslands of Velavadar Blackbuck National Park in Bhavnagar district, Gujarat, The Blackbuck Lodge offers one of the most distinctive wilderness experiences in Asia. Conceptualized by passionate naturalist and hotelier Vikramaditya Singh of Palitana, the lodge spans 70 acres of private grassland reserve, providing front-row seats to India’s rare, open savannah landscape.
The architecture captures the authentic spirit of an African bush lodge seamlessly integrated into rural Kathiawar. Built using locally quarried stone, rough-hewn timber, and thatched roofs, the structures feature large glass bay windows and stone verandahs that merge effortlessly into the swaying golden grass. Natural water bodies wind through the estate, attracting herds of blackbuck antelopes and birdlife right to guests’ doorsteps.
Accommodations comprise just 14 secluded bush cottages (including specialized Plunge Pool Villas and Glass-Fronted Suites). Each cottage features plush wooden interiors, freestanding brass tubs, open-to-sky stone outdoor showers, and expansive private decks equipped with lounging daybeds. Guests frequently wake up to blackbuck antelopes grazing just a few feet from their verandahs.
Dining at The Blackbuck Lodge is a celebration of wholesome Kathiawadi, Gujarati, and international cuisines. Meals are served in a rustic dining hall overlooking a waterbody frequented by wildlife, or served as private bush barbecues set around open log fires under clear night skies. The kitchen prioritizes organic local grains, fresh dairy, and garden produce.
Days at Velavadar revolve around the rhythms of the open plains. Guests embark on morning and evening 4×4 open-top jeep safaris through Blackbuck National Park to witness magnificent blackbuck herds, endangered Indian wolves, striped hyenas, and vast flocks of migratory harriers. Returning to the lodge, afternoons are spent enjoying quiet reading sessions on private decks or watching animals at the waterhole.
