The Taj Mahal Palace

Built in 1903 by Jamsetji Tata as India’s premier grand hotel, a legendary waterfront palace where Moorish arches, Florentine domes, floating cantilever staircases, and museum-grade Indian art define urban luxury.

THE STORY OF THE PALACE

India's Original Harbor Landmark Since 1903

Standing proudly on Apollo Bunder in South Mumbai, directly facing the Gateway of India (which was built two decades after the hotel), The Taj Mahal Palace is India’s most historically significant hotel. Commissioned by industrialist Jamsetji N. Tata as a gift to the commercial capital he loved, it opened its doors on December 16, 1903, as the country’s first luxury establishment—pioneering electricity, American fans, and German elevators long before any other venue in the region.

Designed through a collaboration between Indian architects Sitaram Khanderao Vaidya and D.N. Mirza, and completed by British architect W.A. Chambers, the building is a masterwork of Indo-Saracenic and Moorish architecture. Its central floating staircase—a cantilevered masterpiece constructed without central supports—rises beneath an Alabaster dome inspired by Florentine Renaissance design, flanked by wide oceanfront balconies, arched arcades, and Belgian crystal chandeliers.

The hotel comprises two distinct yet harmonious structures: the historic 1903 Palace Wing and the 1973 Taj Mahal Tower. Accommodations in the Palace Wing feature soaring high ceilings, hand-woven silk carpets, fine antique furniture, and floor-to-ceiling windows framing views over the Arabian Sea or the quiet internal swimming pool court. Every corridor functions as a private gallery, displaying over 4,000 museum-grade works ranging from Mughal miniatures to contemporary Indian masters.

Gastronomy at The Taj Mahal Palace has set the benchmark for Mumbai’s culinary culture for over a century. The hotel introduced India’s first licensed bar (Harbour Bar in 1933) and first 24-hour eatery (Shamiana). Today, nine world-class dining venues span Wasabi by Morimoto for modern Japanese, Golden Dragon for authentic Sichuan, Souk for Eastern Mediterranean rooftop dining, and traditional afternoon tea at the sea-facing Sea Lounge.

Staying at The Taj Mahal Palace is an unhurried, evocative journey into living history. Guests can join daily heritage walks led by in-house historians, unwind at the J Wellness Circle spa, or step out directly into the vibrant art galleries, boutiques, and colonial avenues of Colaba and Kala Ghoda. It remains an uncompromised symbol of Indian elegance, resilience, and warm hospitality.
