THE SERENE SOUTH • SOUTHERN COLLECTION

The Serene South

Emerald backwaters, 19th-century Nizam palaces, and ancient Chola heritage estates — southern territories where maritime spice routes, tropical climate, and living dynastic history define every stay.

THE STORY OF THE SOUTH

Spice Routes, Dynasties, and Backwater Solitude

Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana do not share a single climate, culture, or landscape. What connects them in this collection is a profound connection to water, soil, and ancient trade routes, alongside the physical dedication required to preserve their architectural soul. Where Rajasthan built its identity around desert trade routes and sun-hued fortresses, the Serene South was shaped by tropical monsoons, maritime spice tracks crossing the Indian Ocean, and sovereign kingdoms that built their permanence in hand-carved teak, black granite, and copper.

Hospitality across these territories developed around very specific human and cultural intentions. In the coffee estates of Coorg and the Cardamom Hills, planters and indigenous communities carved sustainable sanctuaries into dense forest canopies. Along the backwaters of Kerala, ancestral wooden Tharavads slated for destruction were rescued and reassembled piece-by-piece. In Thanjavur and Chettinad, royal patronage and merchant wealth birthed courtyard mansions adorned with Burmese teak, Italian marble, and handmade Athangudi tiles.

Operating a luxury hotel in these environments often leads to commercial compromise. Most operators in the South build high-capacity beach towers and generic glass resorts to capture mass seasonal crowds. We skip those entirely. Every stay in this collection was selected because it respects its environment—whether that means a 19th-century palace dedicated strictly to traditional Ayurveda, a tribal wilderness lodge overlooking the Kabini River, or a restored lake sanctuary on Vembanad Lake.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

The questions we are asked most often about staying in the Serene South — answered through first-hand knowledge of the region and the properties we personally vouch for.

The collection covers four distinct southern territories: Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana.

The ideal window is from October to March when the weather across the southern peninsula is warm, dry, and pleasant for coastal, backwater, and heritage exploration.

Signature properties (like Taj Falaknuma Palace or Kalari Kovilakom) represent absolute world-class benchmarks in royal heritage, wildlife, and healing. Privé properties are intimate, architecture-led heritage estates (like Visalam or Coconut Lagoon), while Escapes represent landmark coastal, backwater, and maritime hideaways.

Yes. Properties like Coconut Lagoon are intentionally isolated on Lake Vembanad and accessed exclusively via private boat to maintain total backwater tranquility.

Yes. Kabini and Coorg sit relatively close to one another in Karnataka, making them an ideal combined 5-to-7-night wildlife and plantation itinerary easily connected by private road transfer.

CGH Earth Kalari Kovilakom in Palakkad—a palace dedicated strictly to doctor-guided, traditional Ayurvedic treatments in a footwear-free, serene environment.

Svatma in Thanjavur, which immerses guests directly into Chola art, bronze casting, Carnatic music, and authentic Tamil culinary traditions.

Brunton Boatyard is built on the historic site of a 19th-century Victorian shipyard, preserving maritime Dutch and Portuguese colonial design with every single room directly overlooking the active harbor.

We recommend 5 to 7 nights minimum when covering 1 or 2 sub-regions (e.g., Kerala backwaters + Tamil Nadu heritage, or Karnataka wildlife + coffee hills).

Yes. Every property has been audited against our Five-Test Framework — evaluated for story, destination integration, singular experience, luxury execution, and personal recommendation.
