Built in the 19th century by Dhatri Thampuratti, Ranee of Vengunad, in Kollengode near Palakkad, Kalari Kovilakom stands in a region whose healing reputation dates back to Prince Dharmavarman in the 10th century. CGH Earth sensitively restored the sprawling royal palace into “The Palace for Ayurveda”—a sanctuary that blends regal scale with the absolute medical rigor of an Ayurvedic hospital accredited by the NABH.

The architecture reflects traditional Keralite Zenana wing design, wooden gables, terracotta tile roofs, and open inner courtyards framed by ancient trees. Upon admission, guests shed their outdoor shoes and leather belongings (wearing provided cotton footwear or going barefoot) and change into uniform white organic cotton garments provided by the palace, immediately removing external social status and aligning with the inward healing journey.

Kalari Kovilakom is not a resort spa for casual weekend pampering; it is a licensed Ayurvedic hospital with 12 specialized treatment rooms and senior resident Vaidyas. Guests undergo a minimum commitment of 14 to 28 nights for deep Panchakarma detox, lifestyle disorder management, and preventative rejuvenation. Every treatment—from herbal oil abhyangas to Kizhi and Shirodhara—is prescribed individually following daily morning doctor consultations.

The kitchen at Kalari Kovilakom is treated like a sacred shrine. Prepared exclusively in traditional brass, iron, and clay vessels without refined oil, garlic, onion, or heavy spices, every vegetarian meal is tailored specifically to the guest’s dosha balance (Vata, Pitta, Kapha). Meat, alcohol, tobacco, tea, and coffee are completely prohibited, ensuring the digestive system works in total harmony with the daily treatments.
