LEVISTAY ESCAPES • GANGTOK, SIKKIM

The Elgin Nor-Khill

Built in 1938 as the private royal guesthouse of the Chogyal (King) of Sikkim—where hand-painted dragon frescoes, carved choktse tables, traditional silken khada greetings, and sweeping views over the Gangtok valley celebrate royal Sikkimese hospitality.

THE STORY OF THE HOTEL

A 1938 Royal Guesthouse of the Chogyal of Sikkim

Commissioned in 1938 by the 11th Chogyal (King) of Sikkim, Sir Tashi Namgyal, The Elgin Nor-Khill was built as a private royal guesthouse to accommodate visiting dignitaries, heads of state, and royal guests. Named “Nor-Khill,” which translates to “House of Jewels,” this historic property sits elevated in the heart of Gangtok, offering an intimate window into the refined courtly lifestyle of the Sikkimese monarchy.

The architecture is a vibrant tribute to traditional Sikkimese royal aesthetics. Built with sloped roofs, solid stone masonry, and wide verandas, the interiors are adorned with intricate hand-painted dragon murals, sacred Buddhist motifs, polished Burma teak floors, and period wooden furniture. Hand-carved choktse (folding wooden tea tables) and vintage brass lamps line the lounges, evoking a bygone era of Himalayan elegance.

Accommodations comprise 25 thoughtfully restored rooms and suites, each infused with timeless Raj-era and Sikkimese charm. Rooms feature warm timber floorboards, plush upholstered seating, period wardrobes, marble-finished bathrooms, and large windows opening onto manicured gardens or panoramic views across the Gangtok valley and surrounding mountain ridges.

Gastronomy at The Elgin Nor-Khill highlights authentic Sikkimese heritage and multi-cuisine comfort. The Shangri-La Dining Room serves set buffets and à la carte spreads featuring traditional Sikkimese specialties—such as Gyathuk, Momo, and local nettle soup—alongside European and Pan-Asian dishes under crystal chandeliers; while The Dragon Bar offers cozy seating for evening spirits, fine wines, and single-origin tea.

Life at Nor-Khill begins with traditional royal warmth. Upon arrival, guests are greeted with a silken Tibetan khada scarf and a glass of signature cherry liquor. Days are spent exploring nearby Rumtek and Enchey Monasteries, strolling along the pedestrianized MG Marg, or relaxing in the peaceful garden gazebo with a warm pot of freshly brewed Sikkim tea while taking in the fresh mountain air.
