The Lalit Grand Palace

Built in 1910 for Maharaja Pratap Singh as Gulab Bhavan—a 28-acre royal estate on the shores of Dal Lake, where centuries-old Chinar trees shade historic palace halls and royal Kashmiri gardens.

THE STORY OF GULAB BHAVAN

A Century of Royal Legacy on the Shores of Dal Lake

Commissioned in 1910 by Maharaja Pratap Singh and served as the royal residence of Maharaja Hari Singh until 1956, Gulab Bhavan is Srinagar’s most historically significant palace address. Designed to showcase the height of Dogra royal splendor at the foot of the Zabarwan range, the estate played host to political summits, foreign dignitaries, and historic meetings—including Mahatma Gandhi’s famous visit to Kashmir in 1947.

Spread across 28 acres of manicured lawns and ancient groves, the estate’s defining visual feature is its collection of giant, centuries-old Chinar trees (Platanus orientalis). The architecture reflects a rare blend of traditional British Viceregal layout and native Kashmiri craftsmanship: grand timber-framed verandas, sloping gables, local stone masonry, and intricate hand-carved geometric woodwork decorating the public reception halls.

Accommodation across the 113 palace rooms, suites, and private cottages combines historic grand scales with classic luxury. High ceilings, polished hardwood floors, hand-knotted Silk-on-Silk carpets, and antique brass fixtures define the guest suites. Many rooms feature working fireplaces, private sit-out balconies, and direct views through the Chinar canopy toward Dal Lake or the surrounding mountain ridge.

Dining at The Lalit Grand Palace celebrates the culinary heritage of the Kashmir Valley. The Chinar, the main dining restaurant named after the iconic trees framing its windows, serves an authentic multi-course Wazwan feast (featuring Rogan Josh, Rista, and Tabak Maaz) alongside international cuisine. Guests can also enjoy afternoon high tea on the palace lawns under the Chinar trees or drinks at Dal Bar, featuring views across the gardens toward the lake.

The estate provides a peaceful, spacious sanctuary away from the city’s commercial streets while keeping guests within easy reach of the Mughal Gardens (Nishat and Shalimar) and Shankaracharya Temple. Facilities include a temperature-controlled indoor pool enclosed in a classic wooden pavilion, Rejuve – The Spa, and private pathways through the 28-acre grounds for morning walks amidst royal Kashmiri history.
