The story of The Dwarika’s Hotel began in 1952 when founder Dwarika Das Shrestha noticed carpenters sawing up an ancient, intricately carved wooden post from a demolished palace for firewood. Moved to save Nepal’s disappearing architectural heritage, he purchased the post—setting off a lifelong mission to rescue thousands of 14th-to-16th-century Newari wooden artifacts across the Kathmandu Valley. Today, those salvaged treasures form the structural fabric of one of South Asia’s most extraordinary heritage sanctuaries.

Designed as a grand Newari palace estate, the architecture utilizes local red brick, sun-dried terracotta tiles, and hundreds of individually restored wooden windows (Sanjhya and Lunjhya). The hotel’s layout centers around serene, stone-paved courtyards (Chowks) shaded by old trees, where brass oil lamps glow at twilight and the quiet sound of trickling water fountains creates an oasis of calm just minutes from Pashupatinath Temple.

Accommodations comprise 80 individually designed rooms and suites, each constructed using local materials and traditional techniques.
