THE STORY OF THE ESTATE
Five Distinct Architectural Concept Sanctuaries Across the Last Shangri-La
Launched in late 2018, Six Senses Bhutan reimagined high-altitude luxury hospitality through its “Khamsa Journey” concept—a royal pilgrimage named after traditional Bhutanese royal walks.Rather than creating identical lodges, Six Senses built five architecturally distinct sanctuaries across Thimphu, Punakha, Paro, Gangtey, and Bumthang, with each location showcasing a specific theme tied to its valley’s natural topography and cultural history.
Designed by Habita Architects, the structural identity shifts dramatically from lodge to lodge. From the dramatic water reflection ponds of “Palace in the Sky” in Thimphu and the cantilevered “Flying Farmhouse” in Punakha, to the stone-ruin aesthetics of Paro and the elevated “Birdwatching Bridge” in Gangtey, each lodge serves as a design pavilion in harmony with its landscape.
Accommodations across the five lodges total 82 suites and villas, ranging from 67-square-meter suites to expansive three-bedroom pool villas. Interiors combine natural unvarnished timbers, hand-woven Bhutanese rugs, traditional wood-burning bukhari stoves, and floor-to-ceiling glass walls that draw sweeping valley light and mountain ridge views inside.
Gastronomy across Six Senses Bhutan focuses on the brand’s “Eat With Six Senses” philosophy—combining fresh organic produce from on-site permaculture gardens with regional Bhutanese delicacies and international cuisine. Guests enjoy private lunches set inside working rice paddies, candlelit dinners amid pine forests, and organic teahouse tastings pairing buckwheat delicacies with local herbal infusions.
Wellness is the beating heart of the Six Senses Bhutan experience. Each lodge features a dedicated Six Senses Spa with specialized facilities—including hot-stone Dotsho baths, pyramid meditation rooms, outdoor heated pools, and customized Sowa Rigpa herbal treatments tailored to help guests acclimatize, restore inner balance, and connect deeply with the surrounding natural wilderness.
