THE STORY OF THE ESTATE
Five Historic Colonial Bungalows Scattered Across Sri Lanka's Golden Valley of Tea
Located in the Bogawantalawa Valley—famously known as Sri Lanka’s “Golden Valley of Tea”—Ceylon Tea Trails is the world’s first tea bungalow resort and the founding property of Resplendent Ceylon. Elevated at 1,250 meters (4,000 feet) in the Central Highlands, the estate comprises five restored 19th and early 20th-century colonial planter bungalows scattered across a breathtaking 2,000-acre working tea plantation.
Each bungalow possesses its own distinct personality, architectural lineage, and micro-setting. Connected by scenic walking and mountain biking trails that wind through tea slopes and forest reserves, the estate allows guests to experience an authentic “bungalow-hopping” itinerary across the valley while enjoying the seamless hospitality of a unified 5-star Relais & Châteaux retreat.
Accommodations total just 27 rooms and suites spread across the five bungalows. Interiors pay homage to British colonial elegance, featuring high ceilings, polished teak floorboards, wood-burning fireplaces, four-poster beds draped in fine linens, clawfoot bathtubs, and antique brass fittings. Every bungalow operates with a dedicated master chef, house staff, and personal butler service to cater to guests’ every whim.
Gastronomy at Ceylon Tea Trails is an all-inclusive culinary celebration of colonial heritage and tea culture. Guests begin their mornings with traditional “Bed Tea” served by their butler, enjoy four-course lunches and candlelit dinners featuring tea-infused gastronomy and fresh highland produce, and gather on sunlit verandas for daily British Afternoon Tea paired with single-origin Dilmah teas.
Days on the estate revolve around active highland exploration and gentle relaxation. Guests can take private guided tours of the 1800s Dunkeld Tea Factory with the resident Tea Master to learn the art of orthodox tea making, kayak or stand-up paddleboard on Castlereagh Reservoir, hike along scenic tea picker trails, or enjoy hot stone massages and garden swimming pools.
