According to Hindu tradition, Pushkar Lake formed where a lotus flower dropped by Brahma, the creator god, touched the earth — a founding myth that gives the town its name and its sanctity simultaneously. The Jagatpita Brahma Mandir — one of the only major temples in the world dedicated to Brahma — For centuries, Pushkar has also drawn yogis, wandering sadhus and, more recently, Western spiritual seekers who come to study meditation and Vedic philosophy in its ashrams — a living tradition of pilgrimage that long predates modern tourism.
Pushkar is also home to one of the largest livestock fairs on earth.
