Located just five kilometers from the UNESCO World Heritage fortress of Sigiriya, Jetwing Vil Uyana is one of Asia’s most celebrated achievements in eco-architecture and habitat creation. Opened in 2006, the property pioneered a revolutionary concept: rather than building inside an existing nature reserve, the developers bought degraded agricultural land and constructed a private 28-acre wetland bio-reserve from scratch, drawing inspiration from the 5th-century water gardens of Sigiriya.

The architecture is a homage to Sri Lanka’s rural village heritage and ancient hydraulic engineering. Dwellings are constructed using natural local materials—reclaimed timber, woven illuk grass thatch, bamboo, and terracotta—elevated on wooden stilts over five distinct micro-habitats: Water, Paddy, Marsh, Forest, and Garden. This stilted design allows seasonal waters to flow freely beneath the structures without altering natural soil drainage.

Accommodations comprise 36 private dwellings scattered across the estate to maximize seclusion. Inside, warm teak floorboards, plush king-size beds dressed in natural woven cottons, spacious stone bathrooms with sunken bathtubs, and floor-to-ceiling glass doors open onto wide timber sundecks. Many dwellings feature private freshwater plunge pools suspended directly over the paddy fields or lily-covered marshlands.

Gastronomy at Jetwing Vil Uyana focuses on fresh organic ingredients harvested from the resort’s private fields and nearby villages. The Apsara offers fine dining with sweeping views of the central lake; Sulang serves light international bites beside the main infinity pool; while bespoke private dining experiences—such as a candlelit meal set inside a working paddy field or a treehouse dinner suspended in the forest canopy—deliver unforgettable culinary memories.

Days at Vil Uyana revolve around wildlife integration and cultural discovery.
