Built in 1939 by K.V.AL.M. Ramanathan Chettiar as a grand wedding gift for his eldest daughter, Visalakshi, Visalam stands in the heritage village of Kanadukathan as a monument of paternal devotion. Though the mansion saw limited family occupancy during the post-colonial era, CGH Earth sensitively brought the palatial residence back to life, transforming it into a 15-room boutique sanctuary that honors the prosperous maritime trading heritage of the Chettiars.
The architecture of Visalam is a striking example of “Indo-Deco”—blending clean Art Deco exterior lines with traditional South Indian interior courtyards. Reflecting the global reach of Chettiar merchants, the mansion integrates imported materials from across the world: soaring Burmese teak pillars, Italian marble floors, British cast-iron staircases, and Belgian chandeliers. These international accents are grounded by local craftsmanship, most notably the vibrant, hand-pressed Athangudi floor tiles created in neighboring artisan villages.
