LEVISTAY ESCAPES • LEH, LADAKH

The Grand Dragon

Leh’s original five-star benchmark at 11,562 feet—family-owned by the Abdu lineage since 1974, combining passive solar architecture, hand-carved Rabsal timber craft, and year-round winter heating facing Stok Kangri.

THE STORY OF LEH'S ORIGINAL LANDMARK

High-Altitude Family Legacy Meets Passive Solar Design

The lineage of The Grand Dragon traces back to 1974, when patriarch Din Mohammed of the Abdu family opened Hotel Dragon—one of the very first hospitality ventures in Leh when Ladakh was first opened to international travelers. In 2007, his sons Ghulam Mustafa and Ghulam Mohiuddin expanded that founding vision into The Grand Dragon, establishing the region’s first full-service luxury hotel at 11,562 feet and setting an architectural benchmark for high-altitude hotel operations.

Unlike modern concrete developments that ignore extreme Himalayan weather, the hotel’s structure was built in strict alignment with passive solar design principles. The exterior combines local stone foundations, thick insulated masonry, and massive double-glazed glass windows that capture maximum solar heat throughout Ladakh’s long, freezing winters. The hotel is one of the few luxury addresses in Leh fully operational year-round, equipped with European central heating and underfloor thermal systems.

The interiors function as a living gallery of Ladakhi craftsmanship and fine art. Co-founder Ghulam Mustafa, a recognized master artist, adorned the corridors and public rooms with hand-painted portraits capturing traditional Ladakhi life and ancient monastic motifs. Ceilings display intricate Shing Tsak (geometric wooden joinery), while window treatments feature classic Rabsal woodwork and jewel-toned Kashmiri textiles woven with local Koshen

Dining options across the property celebrate both local high-altitude ingredients and global cuisine. Zasgyath, the all-day dining restaurant, serves traditional Ladakhi specialties (Skyu, Thukpa, and butter tea) alongside North Indian menus. RYU OKA offers Pan-Asian dining at 11,562 feet, while Solja, the lobby tea lounge, serves TWG teas and specialty coffees framing views of the Stok Kangri peak.

Located in Sheynam, just minutes from Leh town center and the airport, the property serves as a comfortable, centrally heated basecamp for exploring the Indus Valley. Guests can acclimatize in comfortable lounges before setting off on curated old-town heritage walks, trips to Thiksey and Hemis monasteries, or winter snow leopard expeditions through the neighboring Hemis National Park.

WHY LEVISTAY RECOMMENDS THIS

The Grand Dragon remains the reliable five-star anchor for travel in Leh. We recommend it specifically to families, first-time Ladakhi travelers, and winter visitors who prioritize central heating, spacious lifts and facilities, local family ownership, and uninterrupted views of the Stok Kangri mountain range.
