Created by Altaf Chapri (founder of ABChapri Retreats) through the painstaking restoration of his family’s traditional lake vessel, Sukoon—a Sufi term translating to unshakeable peace and contentment—was launched to revolutionize Kashmir’s iconic houseboat experience. Houseboats originally emerged in the late 19th century when British officers, barred by the Dogra Maharaja from purchasing land in the valley, built floating wooden residences along Dal Lake. Sukoon updates that aquatic legacy for modern travel.

Unlike the densely packed lines of commercial houseboats moored along the noisy Boulevard Road, Sukoon is anchored permanently in Kabootar Khana—a quiet, pristine corner of Dal Lake near lotus gardens. Positioned facing west across the open water toward the Pir Panjal mountain range, its location offers complete visual privacy and immunity from heavy lake traffic, while remaining accessible via a short 10-minute *Shikara* boat transfer from the shore.

The interior of the vessel comprises just five guest suites—four Deluxe Cabins and one spacious bow Suite—ensuring an intimate, uncrowded atmosphere on board. The design showcases traditional Kashmiri woodcraft, featuring intricate hand-carved *Khatamband* cedar ceilings, rich pinewood floors, antique brass sconces, and large glass picture windows framing water views. Each suite is fully climate-controlled with modern heating for sub-zero winters, central hot water, and en-suite bathrooms equipped with rainforest showers and bathtubs.

Dining on Sukoon is a celebrated daily ritual that takes place either in the formal indoor dining room or upstairs on the open-air sundeck. The resident chef prepares daily menus featuring authentic Kashmiri *Wazwan* delicacies (such as *Rogan Josh*, *Haak* greens, and saffron-infused *Kahwa* tea) alongside light international dishes. All produce is sourced fresh daily, often purchased directly from local boat merchants paddling past the hull.

What truly sets Sukoon apart is its pioneer commitment to environmental preservation. Recognizing the delicate ecology of Dal Lake, Sukoon was the first houseboat in Kashmir to implement an advanced bio-tank filtration system, eliminating the untreated waste discharge that has plagued the lake for decades. Guests can spend their days lounging on the sundeck watching floating lotus fields, enjoying private *Shikara* rides through hidden canal pathways, or sipping high tea as golden hour lights up the surrounding peaks.
