Before it carried the Taj name, this was Gorbandh Palace — built in 1992 under the HRH Group, a hospitality company specialising in heritage-styled properties rather than a royal family operating its own ancestral home. Taj completed a full renovation and took over operations in February 2024. We want to be direct about what that means: this is a thoughtfully designed, genuinely well-built heritage-style hotel with three decades of history as a property — not a centuries-old palace, and not a building any royal family ever lived in. We list it on the strength of its design, its dining programme and Taj’s service consistency, not on a claim to ancestral provenance it doesn’t have.

The name itself carries meaning. Gorbandh refers to the elaborately decorated camel necklace worn across Rajasthan’s pastoral communities — a symbol chosen specifically to root the property in the desert culture surrounding it rather than in royal grandeur alone. Eighty-three rooms and suites sit within a striking sandstone façade, adorned with jharokhas and chhatris in the traditional Rajasthani idiom, while the lush gardens that surround the property create a genuinely unexpected contrast with the arid city beyond its walls.

The interior carries the same conviction as the façade — sumptuous furnishings, intricate murals and shimmering chandeliers throughout, with the grand lobby along what the hotel calls Central Avenue serving as the property’s social spine, connecting three distinct dining and drinking venues under one roof. Stayed at Taj Gorbandh Palace, Jaisalmer recently and had a really pleasant experience overall. The property is beautiful, peaceful, and very well maintained. The hospitality was excellent from the moment we checked in, and the staff made sure we were comfortable throughout the stay. Food and service were also very good. Would especially like to mention Soubhagya, who is working as an intern there. He was extremely polite, sincere, and always ready to help with a smile. Really appreciate the hospitality and would definitely love to visit again.

We celebrated my birthday at Taj Gorbandh and stayed there for a night. We were thoroughly impressed with the property and hospitality. The rooms had balconies and were beautifully decorated. Their high tea included a puppet and magic show, along with delicious snacks. The buffet dinner and breakfast were fantastic, offering a wide variety of tasty options. The full staff even celebrated my birthday, making the occasion extra special. They also gifted my son a soft toy he absolutely loved. I’d definitely return to Taj Gorbandh when I’m in Jaisalmer.

The Taj Gorbandh palace is a lovely property in Jaisalmer, located not far from the fort and other attractions. The palace has a lovely feel with traditional architecture and dacades still retained, and a beautiful sandstone finish which glows in the sunlight! Rooms were comfortable with all amenities available including decent wifi, though power outages seemed to be a frequent occurrence. Buffet breakfast could have been slightly better in terms of the item selection and quality of some items, especially the baked breads and omelettes. The A la carte menu offers multicuisine options as well as local ones, and was nice. Evening snacks could also be improved in quality, i felt. Room Service was prompt and courteous. Highlights of our stay included the night stargazing session with Sharib, who was very knowledgeable and passionate about his subject. Definitely would recommend this place for a comfortable stay in Jaisalmer.
