Suryagarh

Not a palace inherited from history, but a fortress created to celebrate it — today recognised as one of India’s defining luxury destinations.

ABOUT THIS PROPERTY

A Modern Fortress That Already Feels Timeless

Suryagarh did not inherit its grandeur from royal lineage. Conceived by Manvendra Singh Shekhawat and completed in 2009, it rises from a rocky outcrop on the outskirts of Jaisalmer, built almost entirely from locally quarried sandstone by craftsmen whose skills have shaped Rajasthan’s architecture for generations. Inspired by the great desert forts rather than copied from them, Suryagarh achieves something remarkably rare: a contemporary fortress that feels entirely at home in an ancient landscape. Seen from a distance across the Thar, it appears less like a luxury hotel than a citadel that has quietly guarded the desert for centuries.

The interior carries the same conviction. Eighty-one rooms, suites and standalone havelis spread across three floors and eight distinct categories — from 350-square-foot Fort Rooms that recreate the texture of historic desert living, to the 2,750-square-foot Thar Haveli with its own pair of infinity pools, to a 4,201-square-foot Penthouse with three bedrooms and a private terrace built for stargazing. Frescoes drawn from royal periods, hand-carved stonework, courtyards centred on sunken seating areas — every detail was specified rather than inherited, and it shows in the consistency of the result.

Yet architecture alone is not what defines Suryagarh. Its identity comes from the life within its walls. Three distinctive restaurants celebrate the flavours of Rajasthan and beyond. Rait, one of India’s earliest destination desert spas, draws inspiration from the landscape itself. Neel, the indoor swimming pool, reflects the colours of the peacock, while beyond the fort walls guests can explore the desert on horseback, camelback or through thoughtfully curated cultural journeys. Evenings often unfold to the music of the resident Manganiyar musicians, whose family has been closely associated with Suryagarh for years. Together these experiences create something far richer than a luxury hotel—they create a complete destination.

Suryagarh’s environmental commitments are also substantive rather than decorative. The property runs substantially on solar power, operates a rainwater harvesting system with a holding capacity of over 30 million litres, and has planted more than 6,000 indigenous trees across the estate. Shekhawat also founded the “I Love Jaisalmer” campaign — the city’s largest organised cleanliness initiative — reflecting a stated belief that the hotel’s fortunes and the city’s fortunes are inseparable.

WHY LEVISTAY RECOMMENDS THIS

Suryagarh earned its place in our Signature collection for a reason that has nothing to do with luxury amenities and everything to do with conviction. Most new-build "heritage style" hotels feel like a costume. Suryagarh does not — the architecture, the materials, the sustainability commitments and the surrounding desert experiences all point in the same direction, built by someone who clearly wanted Jaisalmer itself to benefit from what he was building. We recommend it to guests who want the visual and emotional drama of staying inside a fort, without needing the fort to be eight hundred years old to believe in it.

ACCOMMODATION AT SURYAGARH

Eight Categories. One Uncompromising Standard.

Eighty-one rooms, suites and standalone havelis spread across eight thoughtfully differentiated categories. From the intimate Fort Room to the expansive three-bedroom Penthouse, every accommodation reflects the same commitment to craftsmanship, natural materials and a distinctly Rajasthani sense of place.

ENTRY CATEGORY

Fort Room

At 350 square feet, the Fort Room is Suryagarh’s most intimate accommodation — and its most direct tribute to the way desert forts have always lived. Understated modern furnishings sit alongside colourful accessories drawn from 18th-century Indian interiors, with either a king-size bed or twins. A genuinely complete introduction to Suryagarh’s design language, at the most accessible scale the property offers

350 sq ft • King or twin beds • Ensuite bathroom
CLASSIC RAJASTHAN

Heritage Room

The Heritage Room blends classic Rajasthan character with genuinely contemporary design — spacious, well-lit, and furnished to feel like a considered fusion rather than a museum piece. This is Suryagarh’s clearest expression of “modern heritage,” built for guests who want the region’s visual language without sacrificing modern comfort.

Spacious layout • Contemporary heritage design • Ensuite bathroom
STANDALONE HAVELI • 1,350 SQ FT

Jaisalmer Haveli

A genuine standalone villa, a short private walk from the main hotel building. The Jaisalmer Haveli is built around its own private courtyard, with a spacious double bedroom, a pantry and minibar, a separate living area, a large ensuite bathroom with a freestanding bath tub, and a private veranda facing the open Thar. Built from the desert’s own natural materials, with handcrafted stone detailing throughout.

1,350 sq ft • Standalone villa • Private courtyard • Private plunge pool
SUITE CATEGORY

Luxury Suite

The Luxury Suite introduces frescoes and paintings drawn from Rajasthan’s royal period directly onto the walls — alongside a private alcove specifically designed for guests to enjoy Suryagarh’s signature Kesari chai in quiet privacy. Plush beds and elegant furnishings make this one of the property’s most personally curated suite experiences.

Royal-period frescoes • Private chai alcove • Plush furnishings • Ensuite bathroom
GARDEN VIEW

Pavilion Room

At 750 square feet, the Pavilion Room doubles the Fort Room’s footprint and trades the desert view for Suryagarh’s lush internal gardens. Sleek wooden furnishings and white marble floors create a calm, contemporary counterpoint to the fort’s exterior drama, with a king-size bed, a dedicated seating area and an ensuite bathroom with both a bath tub and a separate shower.

750 sq ft • King bed • Garden views • Seating area • Bath tub and shower
SIGNATURE CATEGORY

Signature Suite

Suryagarh’s Signature Suites are designed to be reconfigured to personal preference — a double or king-size bed, a serene outdoor terrace fitted with its own plunge pool, and an outdoor seating and dining area positioned for desert views. The marble-clad ensuite pairs a freestanding Jacuzzi bath tub with a separate walk-in shower, among the most generously appointed bathrooms in the property.

Private terrace plunge pool • Freestanding Jacuzzi bath tub • Walk-in shower • Outdoor dining area
ROOFTOP SUITE

Suryagarh Suite

Set on the top floor and finished with rich local textures and furnishings, the Suryagarh Suite is among the largest accommodations in the hotel — customised to personal preference, and built around a rooftop pool positioned away from the rest of the property’s activity. A genuinely private, elevated retreat above the fortress itself.

1,350 sq ft • Top-floor position • Private rooftop pool • Configurable interior • Outdoor seating and dining
SIGNATURE STANDALONE • 2,750 SQ FT

Thar Haveli

The largest and most complete standalone residence at Suryagarh — two double bedrooms, each with its own ensuite bathroom featuring a rectangular stone bath tub and a dedicated space for in-room spa treatments. A central courtyard with grand stone pilasters and a sunken seating area connects a living room, kitchen and pantry, with glass-panelled doors opening onto a veranda decorated with ornate stone carvings — and two private pools facing the desert.

2,750 sq ft • Two bedrooms • Two private pools • In-room spa space • Full kitchen and pantry • Private courtyard
THE ULTIMATE STAY • 4,201 SQ FT

The Penthouse

Perched on the top floor, the Penthouse feels less like a hotel suite and more like a private home suspended above the desert. Three bedrooms, intimate living spaces and a terrace built specifically for stargazing — hand-carved detailing, soft linens and shifting natural light combine for a stay built around quiet, unhurried luxury. The single most complete accommodation Suryagarh offers.

4,201 sq ft • Three bedrooms • Private stargazing terrace • Multiple living spaces • The largest accommodation at Suryagarh
Dining at Suryagarh

Three Restaurants, Three Personalities

Dining at Suryagarh is designed as deliberately as the architecture itself. Each restaurant serves a different purpose—from celebrating the royal kitchens of Marwar to relaxed all-day dining and evening cocktails beneath the desert sky.

Restaurant at Suryagarh

The Legend of Marwad

Suryagarh’s signature restaurant celebrates the culinary traditions of Marwar through recipes inspired by Rajasthan’s royal kitchens. Traditional techniques, carefully sourced ingredients and live Rajasthani music create an experience that feels as much cultural as culinary.

Nosh Restaurant at Suryagarh

Nosh

Open around the clock, Nosh is Suryagarh’s relaxed all-day dining space, serving Indian and international favourites in an informal setting. Whether it’s an early breakfast, afternoon coffee or a late-night meal, it offers comfort without ceremony.

Draksh Restaurant at Suryagarh

Draksh

Draksh is Suryagarh’s intimate bar, serving classic cocktails, premium spirits and carefully selected wines in a space accented with white walls and subtle gold detailing. It is the natural place to begin—or end—an evening at the fort.

AT SURYAGARH

Where the Thar Desert Becomes the Experience

Suryagarh treats the desert surrounding it as the primary attraction, not a backdrop. From private dining on the dunes to the haunting music of resident desert musicians, every experience here is built around the specific landscape this fortress occupies.

Dinners on the Dunes

A bespoke dining experience arranged on secluded dunes just beyond the fortress. Beneath a sky untouched by city light, guests enjoy a multi-course meal served in complete privacy—one of the most memorable evenings Suryagarh offers.

Sundowner at Kuldhara

Kuldhara, the abandoned 13th-century village near Jaisalmer, becomes an extraordinary setting at sunset. Suryagarh arranges private sundowners among the sandstone ruins, combining desert views, curated refreshments and one of the region's most atmospheric historical landscapes.

Picnic at the Oases

A handful of genuine desert oases lie hidden among rocky outcrops near the property. Suryagarh transforms these secluded spots into elegant private picnics with attentive service, refreshments and a rare sense of isolation within the open Thar landscape.

Rait — The Desert Spa

One of the region's pioneering desert spas, Rait draws inspiration from the sands, botanicals and traditions of western Rajasthan. Treatments are designed around the landscape itself rather than imported wholesale from elsewhere.

Neel — The Indoor Pool

Inspired by the blue-green hues of Rajasthan's native peacocks, Neel offers a calm, temperature-controlled retreat from the desert heat, with natural light filtering into a space designed for quiet relaxation.

Evenings With the Manganiyar Musicians

Mehboob Khan and his family, internationally recognised Manganiyar musicians, perform regularly within Suryagarh's courtyards. Their traditional desert songs provide a direct connection to the living musical heritage of western Rajasthan.

Archery and Horse Riding

Suryagarh offers guests the chance to practise traditional archery and explore the surrounding desert on horseback—activities that echo the martial traditions of Rajasthan's historic warrior culture.

Following the Silk Route Trail

Guided explorations retrace elements of the trade routes that once connected Jaisalmer with Central Asia and beyond, revealing how the Thar Desert became a crossroads of commerce, culture and migration.

Why We Listed
Suryagarh

✦ PASSED   ·   ✧ PASSED WITH NOTES   ·   ✕ NOT MET

The Story Test — Passed: Suryagarh’s story is unusual precisely because it has no inherited royal lineage to lean on—and chose to earn its gravitas instead. Built between 2003 and 2009 by Manvendra Singh Shekhawat using local sandstone, local craftsmen and traditional architectural principles, it represents conviction rather than inheritance: a contemporary fortress created to stand alongside Jaisalmer’s historic architectural legacy rather than imitate it.

✦ The Destination Test — Passed: Remove Suryagarh from this specific hilltop on the edge of the Thar Desert and the entire premise collapses. The salmon-pink sandstone at sunset, the views in every direction across open desert, the proximity to Kuldhara’s abandoned ruins, the fossil hill and trails surrounding the property — none of this transfers. The building was designed specifically for this exact patch of desert, and it shows.

✦ The Experience Test — Passed: Dinners served directly on the dunes under an unpolluted night sky. A sundowner at a 13th-century abandoned village. Resident Manganiyar musicians whose performances bring an authenticity that few luxury hotels can genuinely offer. Three architecturally and culinarily distinct restaurants under one roof. Few properties in Rajasthan combine this many genuinely unique experiences within a single address.

✦ The Luxury Test — Passed: From a 350-square-foot Fort Room to a 4,201-square-foot three-bedroom Penthouse, Suryagarh’s luxury scales meaningfully rather than simply adding superficial extras at higher price points. Marble-clad bathrooms, freestanding Jacuzzi tubs, private plunge pools, a dedicated desert spa and genuinely elevated cuisine all support a guest paying Signature-tier rates ensuring guests receive a level of comfort that consistently justifies its Signature Collection position.

✦ The Pride Test — Passed: We would recommend Suryagarh without hesitation to travellers seeking fortress architecture, thoughtful design and experiences deeply rooted in the landscape and culture of western Rajasthan. It remains one of the defining stays in our Signature Collection—and one of the finest introductions to luxury hospitality in Jaisalmer.

Suryagarh is not the oldest hotel in Jaisalmer, nor does it claim to be. What impressed us is how convincingly it creates a sense of place through architecture, craftsmanship and experiences rather than inherited history. That distinction is why it belongs in Levistay Signature.

Questions About Suryagarh

Suryagarh was conceived and built between 2003 and 2009 by Manvendra Singh Shekhawat — it has no centuries-old history. What it does have is genuine conviction in its architecture, materials and craftsmanship, built using local sandstone, traditional craftsmanship and regional architectural principles to create the experience of a desert fortress rather than a themed hotel. Guests who want fortress drama without requiring eight centuries of provenance consistently find Suryagarh delivers exactly that.

For couples and honeymooners — the Signature Suite or Jaisalmer Haveli, both offering private plunge pools and genuine seclusion. For families or larger groups — the Thar Haveli, with two bedrooms and two private pools, or the three-bedroom Penthouse for the most complete experience available. For a first introduction at a more accessible entry point — the Fort Room or Pavilion Room offer Suryagarh’s full design language at a gentler scale.

Suryagarh sits roughly 14 kilometres from Jaisalmer city centre, on a rocky outcrop facing open desert — close enough for an easy day’s exploration of the fort and havelis, far enough to feel genuinely removed from the city at night.

Dinners on the Dunes, the Sundowner at Kuldhara and the Picnic at the Oases are typically arranged on request and may carry an additional charge depending on the specific setup requested. We confirm exact inclusions and any additional costs at the time of booking so there are no surprises on arrival.

Yes — Suryagarh is a genuinely popular destination wedding venue, with courtyards and gardens built at a scale that supports large celebrations alongside its everyday guest experience. If you are considering Suryagarh for a wedding rather than a personal stay, let us know and we will coordinate the relevant conversation directly with the property’s events team.

Suján The Serai is built around a 100-acre private desert estate and a tented-luxury experience close to the Sam Sand Dunes. Suryagarh is an architecturally monumental fortress-style building closer to Jaisalmer city itself, with a far larger and more varied room programme, three distinct restaurants and a dedicated spa. Guests choosing between the two are typically choosing between an intimate tented desert estate and a grand fortress hotel experience — both genuinely exceptional, in different registers entirely.

While one night allows you to experience the fortress itself, we generally recommend at least two nights. This gives you time to enjoy the property, experience one of the curated desert excursions, dine at more than one restaurant and explore Jaisalmer without rushing. Guests celebrating a special occasion often choose three nights.
