A Modern Fortress That Already Feels Timeless

Suryagarh did not inherit its grandeur from royal lineage. Conceived by Manvendra Singh Shekhawat and completed in 2009, it rises from a rocky outcrop on the outskirts of Jaisalmer, built almost entirely from locally quarried sandstone by craftsmen whose skills have shaped Rajasthan’s architecture for generations. Inspired by the great desert forts rather than copied from them, Suryagarh achieves something remarkably rare: a contemporary fortress that feels entirely at home in an ancient landscape. Seen from a distance across the Thar, it appears less like a luxury hotel than a citadel that has quietly guarded the desert for centuries.

The interior carries the same conviction. Eighty-one rooms, suites and standalone havelis spread across three floors and eight distinct categories — from 350-square-foot Fort Rooms that recreate the texture of historic desert living, to the 2,750-square-foot Thar Haveli with its own pair of infinity pools, to a 4,201-square-foot Penthouse with three bedrooms and a private terrace built for stargazing. Frescoes drawn from royal periods, hand-carved stonework, courtyards centred on sunken seating areas — every detail was specified rather than inherited, and it shows in the consistency of the result.

Yet architecture alone is not what defines Suryagarh. Its identity comes from the life within its walls. Three distinctive restaurants celebrate the flavours of Rajasthan and beyond. Rait, one of India’s earliest destination desert spas, draws inspiration from the landscape itself. Neel, the indoor swimming pool, reflects the colours of the peacock, while beyond the fort walls guests can explore the desert on horseback, camelback or through thoughtfully curated cultural journeys. Evenings often unfold to the music of the resident Manganiyar musicians, whose family has been closely associated with Suryagarh for years. Together these experiences create something far richer than a luxury hotel—they create a complete destination.

Suryagarh’s environmental commitments are also substantive rather than decorative. The property runs substantially on solar power, operates a rainwater harvesting system with a holding capacity of over 30 million litres, and has planted more than 6,000 indigenous trees across the estate. Shekhawat also founded the “I Love Jaisalmer” campaign — the city’s largest organised cleanliness initiative — reflecting a stated belief that the hotel’s fortunes and the city’s fortunes are inseparable.

The Legend of Marwad

Suryagarh’s signature restaurant celebrates the culinary traditions of Marwar through recipes inspired by Rajasthan’s royal kitchens. Traditional techniques, carefully sourced ingredients and live Rajasthani music create an experience that feels as much cultural as culinary.

Nosh

Open around the clock, Nosh is Suryagarh’s relaxed all-day dining space, serving Indian and international favourites in an informal setting. Whether it’s an early breakfast, afternoon coffee or a late-night meal, it offers comfort without ceremony.

Draksh

We had an amazing stay at Suryagarh for 3 days/2 nights including New Year's Eve. The level hospitality exceeded our expectations. The staff went above and beyond in taking care of the guests. Special shout out to Saurabh who cared for our family during our meals and also during the New Year's Eve gala dinner. Also, props to Vijay Meena in the gym. As a professional fitness trainer, Vijay was exceptional in helping me in my training and also taught me new things on boxing as well as on the use of mudgal. It is people like them who make this a special place.

It's awesome experience at suryagarh. we visited with family . all the staff hospitality, taking care of such a small thing it's amazing. taking extra care of elder person it' s really appreciate. break fast quality of food , presentation is too good and also in dinner making special for jain eventhough that's not in buffet dinner . so overall must recommanded to visit this beautiful place.

Luxury at its pinnacle. The sheer magnificence of Suryagarh had us in awe. The royalty of the walls was deeply echoed in the splendid services offered with the warmest smile of the staff. There’s nothing that this hotel lacks - except maybe the beach (which is impossible, being in Rajasthan). We are made to feel what it means to live like Kings. From the Khamma Ghani to the personalized Rajasthani “Geet” sung beautifully for our kids, each experience will remain etched in our minds for a very very long time. Lavish breakfasts, delightful sweets like the boondi and Rose and Date Barfis made in house….the food is on a level of superiority rarely seen elsewhere. Every single facility is next level awesome!

Our stay @Suryagarh was exceptional and will always be a cherished memory for us The accomodation, facilities are very good but what sets it apart is the staff. Our host was a lovely young lady named Khushee whose prompt, patient and efficient work definitely make her a rising star in her field. Mr Balwant of guest services was always around to help and make valuable suggestions. All our meals were absolutely fantastic and Ranveer Singh made sure all our dietary and taste preferences were always accomodated. Jalals presence at any meal ensured lively banyer and good local recommendations and bits of local history even the guides didnt know. From being greeted at the gate everday by a smiling, warm Sawai Singh, to Devendra looking after housekeeping so well to Khushee & Balwant indulging our every request - we are already planning pur next trip to Suryagarh!!
